Turkey hunting last week was fun, but we didn't get a bird. We also didn't get to enjoy the tranquility of a spring morning. Mostly because nothing about Riley is tranquil. She did pretty well, but it was asking a lot of her at times to be still. I got to see the show of a lifetime. I had three mature gobblers in full strut for over two hours. And at one point there were five birds strutting at once. And Riley was in a position where she couldn't see them. So that is a major downside to trying to get three people set up without spooking birds. She had fun though and asked to go again. Maybe next year she'll have a little less wiggle in her.
The week without Sherman has been mostly successful. Everyone has been where they were supposed to be, on time, all week.
Yesterday I forgot to let one of the dogs out in the morning before work. Of course I didn't know that until I got home at lunch. It is nothing shy of miraculous that nothing was damaged, or peed on, in our house.
Every year my kids have begged to play soccer. I have always said no. This year we are a few weeks into their first soccer seasons, and Davis already wants to quit, and Riley has already said she doesn't want to do it again. Glad I volunteered to coach...
A small parenting confession: I yell. I don't mean to. I start off asking, then I ask with a strained tone, then I yell. It doesn't make me fell good, but it works. I just don't understand why they can't listen during the first two phases. Wouldn't that be easier on everyone?

Busy-ness
Last weekend Riley had a soccer game. She had fun, scored a goal, and seems to think soccer is just okay. She has been asking when softball will start so I am thinking that soccer isn't going to be a long term activity for her.
On Sunday we planted. We potted tomatoes, peppers, marigolds, and several different herbs. They have been looking pretty good but the next couple nights we are pulling them into the garage since we have freeze advisories. I am hoping we get at least a little fruit from the efforts and also hoping they force me to spend at least a little time in the yard this summer.
Davis seems to be changing. He says really mature things sometimes, and just feels like he is on the verge of a very sudden burst of growing up. I am definitely ready for tantrums to end but I know that the good parts of immaturity are going too.
Riley is already smarter than me. She's in kindergarten. She can do the subtraction mad-minute/hot pencils. I learned subtraction in the second grade.
Sherman travels next week for a work meeting. Just a little nervous. You see, he does all of the laundry, dishes, trash take-out. He remembers to put the trash cans on the curb and to bring in our milk delivery. He pretty much keeps this train on the tracks. It's a lot of pressure.
This weekend I am taking Riley turkey hunting. I haven't been in a few years but she's still excited about last fall's deer hunt that I know she will enjoy it. I really just want her to hear Jerry call. I like hearing him, he is so patient and never rushes a bird or calls too much. If we could be lucky enough for her to hear a gobbler while we are out that would be icing on the cake. I don't have a lot of expectation for getting a turkey, but of course that would be awesome. And the peacefulness of the woods waking up on a spring morning, well that can't be described.

Weekend Review
SPRING HAS FULLY ARRIVED! So, so excited. We have had such beautiful weather the last few days, and the kids have been outside playing and running and just enjoying life.
Friday night we had impromptu dinner guests. Sherman was throwing some pork steaks on the grill, mom and dad were still in town so they swung by to eat and hang out with us. It was a great night. The first sweet corn of the year was enjoyed by all as well. My kids attack corn on the cob like vultures on road kill, it is kinda disgusting but also hilarious.
Saturday Riley had her first soccer game. It was actually kinda fun. And she scored a goal, which was obviously her highlight. The kids did okay, and I learned a lot about some of the things I need to teach them so that we can get a little better. After soccer Davis and I ran some errands while Riley went to a friends house. Sherman ran the smoker all day and the whole house smelled like barbecue and summer. That night I went out with friends and had a great night.
Sunday was so beautiful. We opened all the windows in the house and let the spring air freshen everything. It was warm and sunny. We forced the kids back outside every time they came back in. I got most of the too small and too wintry clothes out of the kids rooms. I also got in a nap :)
We tried to soak in the day before the rain that is predicted for this week and it was the prefect closure the the weekend.
